The Upper Face

of the Inner West

A Heritage Project of Sydney, Australia

When we walk around our districts we tend not to look up much. That's understandable - we don't want to collide with other pedestrians or get knocked down crossing the road!  Much of the time we're also distracted by street level sights of every sort, ranging from the fascinating world of shop windows to the very real need to avoid stepping in it.

Yet if we remain transfixed by what's going on at ground level we can miss the immense riches of our Australian architectural heritage abiding unobserved just a short distance above our heads.  For example the splendid detail characterising many older structures, or the striking forms of the better of our newer buildings. This project aims to correct that imbalance by presenting for both local and wider audiences a collection of views of the upper face of the historic suburbs of the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales.
